WHITE

I thought I might inspire with something in white today – even though I’m fully aware of the fact that not everyone is over the moon when it comes to white. But alas, so it warms my old heart. Everyone has their favourite colours & I guess that some would not even think of white as colour, or black either, for that matter. I for one, think that white fits almost everywhere. White is the colour of pure snow or milk. It’s the color of light that contains all of the wavelengths of the visible spectrum without absorption. In Western culture, white is the color most often associated with innocence, perfection, the good, honesty, neutrality & lightness. It’s interesting how much of importance we associate to a colour.

It’s said that white colour affects us physically, such as aid in mental care. It encourages us to clear clutter or other obstacles. Even that the colour evokes purification of thoughts & actions. The ancient greeks wore white to bed to ensure pleasant dreams. According to Pantone inc., white is the best selling colour for the classic american t-shirt. I find it hard to find stuff in white, such as garment, bedding or furniture, to give a few examples. By that I mean in Australia or rather here in Sydney. Recent months, it has started to appear white pants in the stores, which have been almost impossible to find previously. I had to take the opportunity to shop several pair of white pants at home, when we were on a visit. Things are changing slowly.

Here’s, to those who don’t consider white being a colour:

“The first of all single colors is white … We shall set down white as the representative of light, without which no color can be seen; yellow for the earth; green for water; blue for air; red for fire; and black for total darkness.” — Leonardo Da Vinci

Personal touch

I’m leaving Christmas to rest for a while even if it Lucia today back home. Instead, it will be about interiors in varying styles – no extremes – but a bit more about small differences or rather taste, actually. I’m not a daring person when it comes to home decor. I am, after all, a fairly ordinary woman & therefore choose the images that are common but appealing in different ways. You know by now that I’m rather beige & predictable in my taste. I like it in that way, you see!

A home is something we all have in common, where we create our own world … our own space, our way of life & living. Some like to have it as in a magazine, others want to find their own thing. Some build their homes from memories of their childhood. Again, some have no direction, but it gets as it gets, AND usually it becomes good … because it’s about lifestyle. In fact, there are no limitations, more than in our heads. We are taught or influenced by people we spend time with, newspapers we read or TV programs we watch. The older we get, the more often we end up in the style we ar grown up with. It’s like as we sometimes take after habits or behaviors after our parents, despite the fact that we said – I’ll never do this or that. It happens unconsciously, simply. The force of a habit is great.

Now, not that there’s something wrong with that, just a general observation. It’s precisely what makes things so interesting, right? The perfect, or the half-finished, or that which is in constant change. Or the odd or unusual or completely ordinary – the personal touch!

Christmas cosiness

Christmas collection form the swedish We have some Christmas decorations at home, mostly in the kitchen & dining area. We are doing what we can to get into a christmassy spirit, despite the heat outside. It’s nice in the evening, when the darkness slowly falls. It gets pitch black outside which makes you feel switched off from the outside world. With the christmas tree, candle lights & the smell of gingerbread in the air, it feels as if Santa will knock on the door, anytime. I can’t  say that we have stressed with any preparation at all. We have been busy with life, that rolls on, regardless. Jobs, schools, meetings & other everyday activities. Plus to bring order at home, after the move…nothing much really –  some structure & things in order. So tonight, we have no plans, just a quiet evening with our boys – on the couch with tea, mulled wine, gingerbread, saffron buns & a Christmas movie … Christmas cosiness, simply.

Nook / 221

Up early today, awakened by my youngest who needed to fill up his car – so I went with him to the gas station, around five minutes drive & walked back – took 25 minutes in the early sun. It’s refreshing to see the neighbourhood wake up & start the day. For once, I felt refreshed & energetic. I managed to fix some stuff at home, in the early morning. It has been a lot of work lately – late evenings, early mornings, a whole lot to fix on the home front plus the heat that takes some energy too. Now it’s fine weather & around 27 degrees – perfect.

Whatever weather, inside or outside, it’s always nice with small nooks where you can retreat, read, take the time to think over things, listen to music or just relax. Moreover, it’s cozy & inviting plus tat it’s a perfect place for short naps too. That’s one of the nicest things & a luxury too, to be able to take a nap during the day. Also, it’s a perfect place in Christmas time – to curl up in peace & quiet – that’s cozy indeed. Sometimes when our boys were small & still were in need of an afternoon-nap, we ended up in arguments about whose turn it was to get them to sleep. We finally agreed to take turns, for family peace, if nothing else. Those were nice times, indeed.

Strings of lights / 218

Christmas – the most enlightened feast during the year, don’t you think. The world should be filled with lamps in various forms as well as outdoor lighting, lightstrings, candles, lanterns, well – what else, yes I forgot the fireplace too. It creates a certain feeling, using lighting here &  there … depending on which feast you are celebrating, what colors you’re using plus where & how much lighting to use. I live in a place where we have dark nights despite a lovely light from early morning to late evening…so we need some help to light up our lives. In this way, this is a great season.

I arrived home late from work one evening & thought lightning had cracking down on our street. But not at all, it was one of our neighbors who had been decorating with all the light that can be bought in the world, in his garden. They live a few houses away from us & I became completely dazzled. I drove by slowly as well as gently & when I  passed, I returned into total darkness again. An amazing experience, I must say … but definetivt not an aesthetic one … but more as an unexpected thing that you do not believe can happen, if you don’t experienced it. It might be cruel to say that it wasn’t beautiful, after probably fairly hard work, but nonetheless an experience, which of course is not bad in itself 🙂
