Daily inspiration, styling

IKEA has an amazing range of home furnishing, although it can many times look very similar no matter what style or set up. Here, they have succeeded with a light grey background & bed in dark wood with dark grey linen. You have to look hard to discover that it’s the furniture giant. It is the secret of their range – that you can put together your own personal style, to function in your everyday life & with your lifestyle. Exciting styling, it is!

Scandinavian style

It is summer in Sweden & winter  here in Australia. FB is filled of comments from family & friends who’s enjoying their summer vacation in what seems to be great weather. My son & his girlfriend are there now too. It makes us feel homesick, especially when we’re watching a typical Swedish tv-show that only runs during the summer months. Allsång på Skansen – sing-along at Skansen. It is a little hard to explain but it’s a long tradition that has become a national “festival”. It’s a tv-show with invited guests performing thier current hit, but they must also select a melody from a song booklet, where everyone in the audience sings along in. Including all who watch at home too!

So with homesickness as a background, this will be a post about Scandinavian style. Something that is very popular in Australia – not just home furnishing but also  music, food, film, fashion & so on. It is after all not so strange really, it is a high standard regarding design, quality & function. I think what appeals to the many, is the use of natural materials & the simplicity of design. I have put together images of what I see as typical of this style & what I’ve grown up with. It’s not the playful & colourful style, but more traditional & a little more mature.

Benches

Benches in various forms are invaluable. They fill up in a nice way, are functional & simple to use. I’m pretty fond of the bench as a furniture – both as a seating place as well as to store things on – very practical.  We have had benches in different rooms from time to time. Perfect in the hallway, kitchen, bedroom, basement … or outdoor. Nowadays, I use more upholstered stools in smaller sizes. Right now we have two in front of the couch, both for tired legs but also to use as extra space for the tea-tray or anything else that’s needed. A bench that has been around for quite a few years now, has had to move from the hall into the living room & have now ended up in the dining room. That’s what happens when you move a lot. What once functioned in a room work better in another – hopefully, that is.

I’m a bit nostalgic, I can’t throw away things, especially furniture that our children have grown up with & which they see as part of their childhood. With everything new, you get a home that looks like an exhibition. We ended up in that situation when we had our furniture in containers. We lived in a ready furnished place, for a longer period while we were looking for a house. Things around you becomes part of you without real economic value. It’s stuff that has sentimental value, things that can not be measured in money. As for example an old bench 🙂
